| Mauritania,
Nouadhibou
Lying along the Atlantic coast of Mauritania is an area with praires, a type of venus clam. The temperature and the quality of the waters here form the perfect conditions for shellfish to thrive. IMARES, the Institute for Marine Resources and Ecosystem Studies at the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands has carried out local research into the possibilities for sustainable exploitation of this region. For the first three years fishing here will be of an experimental nature. A steering committee of biologists from France, Canada and Mauritania and advisers from the Netherlands will be following this experiment intensively. Sustainable fishing with Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification forms the starting point for the involvement of Lenger Seafoods. Lenger
Seafoods has obtained a fishing concession in Maurit and is currently
building a production facility in Nouadhibou, which will create local
employment for about two hundred people. |
