WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Harlingen & The Waddensea

The Lenger Seafoods Group has been farming and fishing in the best sources in the world for 40 years now. It all started in the Wadden Sea, nearby Harlingen. Since then many new raw material sources have been added. Always carefully selected for quality, food safety, and sustainable catch.

The Dutch Wadden Sea is known for the delicious salty taste it imparts to its raw materials. Lenger has a strong position in this area, which has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. Our experienced fishermen catch the best quality cockles in Europe. Previously, this was done mechanically but since 2005, fishing for cockles has been made more sustainable and the cockles are MSC-certified. These days, fishermen use a traditional manual technique which is MSC certified, the so-called “Wonderklauw”.

The North Sea

The North Sea is the sea between Norway, Great Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and

Denmark. The southern limit of the North Sea is the line between Calais in France and Dover in England. The North

Sea is a rich nature reserve and very important to the Lenger Group. Our YE243 razor clam vessel is out there

every day. Our modern equipped langoustine vessels can be found in the same area 3 to 4 days a week.

Furthermore we fish with our own vessels on surf clams (Spisula subtruncata) and atlantic clams (Spisula solida)

England

Lenger Seafoods is active in large parts of England. This country has many beautiful sources, each with its own

specific raw material. The Wash and the Thames are sources with a rich history in cockle fishing. On the west

coast of England, near South and North Wales, Lenger fishes well-known rivers such as the Burry Inlet, 3 Rivers,

River Dee and Morecambe Bay. The Burry Inlet cockles are the first MSC-certified cockles in the world. The East

coast is an area with beautiful whelks. Lynn Shellfish processes them into an end product immediately. Lenger

has cooking facilities at several locations in England, near the Thames, the Wash and in South Wales.

France

On the beautiful wide beaches of France, such as Bai de Somme and La Baule, cockles are collected in the traditional

way. And in various sources in France, we also find whelks.

Denmark

Fishing is done mechanically and sustainably (MSC-certified) on the Limfjord. Lenger Seafoods also owns a

large share of the cockle fishery here in different fishing areas like the Danish Waddensea.

Easterscheldt

The Oosterschelde, the largest National Park in the Netherlands, is best known for its good quality mussels,

oysters and lobster. Thanks to the quality of the location, the current and the rich food supply, the quality of the

shellfish from this area is particularly good.

Bulgaria

The Black Sea in Bulgaria is a wonderful source for wedge clams, also called tellinas in Spanish. In this area, we run a

successful joint venture with Electa, a family business like us, with the same vision and values.

North Vietnam

Meretrix clams are farmed at a 1-hour drive from our modern shellfish factory in Nam Dinh in North Vietnam.

This source is immense and the quality of the Meretrix clams is very good.

Fishing

Lenger Seafoods has its own large, modern fleet and fishes throughout Europe. We also work with a large group of independent fishermen. Over the years, we have been selecting them based on of quality, correct application of rules, respect for the environment and willingness to invest in a sustainable partnership with Lenger Seafoods. It has resulted in a large fleet with a great diversity of traditional fishing methods, adapted to modern standards. This gives Lenger Seafoods a broad and strong fundament on which we can rely and which gives allows us to offer our customers a continuous supply of high quality products.

The Raw Materials

The catch of our fishery in all of our resources depends on Mother Nature. It determines which raw materials it produces. Lenger Seafoods makes good use of this in the field of various shellfish like cockles, razor clams, atlantic, surf and pacific clams, whelks, langoustines, scallops, tellinas etc.. For each raw material, we know where to fish or collect them, how to fish them and how to further treat them throughout the supply chain basically from the source to the shop for which our supply chain has been adapted and designed.

Processing

After the catch, the raw materials are immediately transported to one of Lenger Seafoods’ de-sanding facilities or processing plants. Harlingen is home to one of the largest and most modern depuration systems in Europe. But Lenger Seafoods also has de-sanding capacity in Yerseke and England. Quality and food safety are paramount in our further processing steps.. Special, self-designed techniques ensure maximum cleaning and processing of the various raw materials that are sourced. They stay in the system for at least 24 hours, so they can rinse themselves clean and become sand-free. The raw materials are then cleaned, sorted and packed in nets for the fresh market, or cooked where after the meat is put in cans, jars, tubs or eventually the meat is frozen and packed in bags, trays, skin packs for the various markets and customers under our brands or under the customer’s private label.

Distribution & Market

The final step in our supply chain is the distribution to our customers. Fresh products that are ordered in the morning are loaded on the same day. We outsource the transport of our products to our specialized logistics partners. Thanks to our many years of cooperation, we know that we can rely on their flexibility, quality and continuity. Together, we ensure correct and on-time delivery to our customers and maintain the line of optimal temperature and food safety conditions from source to the customer.
